Giuseppe Bertinazzo
World renowned opera singer Placido Domingo never forgot the Perth man who saved his life from drowning many years ago back in Tel Aviv where they all went for a swim on the beach - and now he has thanked him with a generous 80th birthday gift. Giuseppe Bertinazzo a broadcaster at 6EBA-FM 95.3 for many years plans to buy a new car with his friend's gift.
In an email to Giuseppe on his birthday, Placido Domingo wrote "We will always cherish your friendship, remember your exemplary career as a fellow tenor and admire your wonderful contribution to the world of opera that we both love and share.
Both tenors met in Israel 1962 while performing at a French opera festival. Giuseppe has been quoted to say "even back then my friend had a very charismatic personality and a wonderful voice and I will never forget him".
From this chance meeting on the beach in Tel Aviv, the two tenors have stayed in touch over the years, and Mr. Domingo has invited his friend on many occasions to his international concerts.
In 1990 Placido Domingo came to Western Australia to fulfil a promise to sing in Perth for the WA Opera Company with his friend. Giuseppe said "he loves me like a brother, we are great friends and very close".
Giusseppe Bertinazzo still sings with his group The Musicantes and is a patron and life member of the WA Opera.
Giuseppe always tells us that "singing makes him feel young and carefree".
