 | The launch of Perth’s only Indigenous youth radio program, Whadjuk Radio in March 2007 was the result of months of work behind the scenes between 6EBA-FM, Yorgum Aboriginal Family Counselling, Yirra Yaakin and ABmusic College. |
Whadjuk Radio's first producer and presenter Kylie Farmer at the time was also the Community Liasion Officer at Yirra Yaakin, an actor and also enjoys MC'ing events such as International Women’s Day. Kylie has now moved on to bigger and better things.
2007 NAIDOC week Youth award recipient Ethel Wallam is another presenter on Whadjuk Radio. Ethel is the College Coordinator for Abmusic and mother to three children.
Whadjuk Radio is a community program in the true sense of the word, with information on culture, arts, issues, courses and employment. Whadjuk Radio also supports local Indigenous musicians with live performances on the program. Minister Michelle Roberts launches ...
6EBA and PALS partner up !
 | Indigenous Affairs Minister Michelle Roberts announced the PALS (Partnership,Acceptance, Learning and Sharing) sponsorship to Whadjuk Indigenous Radio at its 6EBA-FM Maylands studios, before members of the Riverlands Montessori Community School and elders from the Autumn Centre in Bayswater. |
Mrs Roberts said PALS was a school-based program that encouraged students to become actively involved in reconciliation, building understanding and strengthening relationships with the indigenous community. It was a joint initiative of the Department of Indigenous Affairs and BHP Biliton Iron Ore.
“During the past four years, PALS has been the platform for some very exciting projects, but not every school finds it easy to arrange visits from indigenous people. Artists and elders are not always available to talk of their culture at times convenient to schools,” she said.
“Through the Whadjuk radio program, indigenous leaders and youth are able to reach out to the community allowing so many more people the opportunity to hear and discuss indigenous culture and history..
Broadcast skills for Indigenous Students
 | It has been a long time in the making, but finally, Yahning Mia, radio broadcast workshops for young Indigenous people has commenced with a workshop at the Rockingham campus of Challenger TAFE. |
Yahning Mia will also address some serious issues such as family violence through interviews with Aboriginal counselling services and DCD employees.
The broadcast series has been funded through the Department of Community Development’s Indigenous Community Partnership Fund. Many organisations have helped 6EBA with planning the course including Yirra Yaakin, Abmusic, Outcare, Yorgum and the City of Bayswater.

NAIDOC funding for outside broadcast
 | The Department of Indigenous Affairs has approved funding to for a live outside broadcast from a NAIDOC event in July this year. Michelle Roberts, Minister for Indigenous Affairs today sent through her congratulations today on 6EBA’s success in the 2007 NAIDOC funding submission. |
| The grant will enable 6EBA’s Whadjuk Radio to broadcast live from the NAIDOC Family Day on Thursday June 12 from Ashfield Reserve, Ashfield. Kylie Farmer and Ethel Wallam will be presenting this special edition of Whadjuk Radio, with special guests from the NAIDOC Family Day featured on the program. |

Kylie Farmer and Ethel Wallam were joined by Nestor Zimmerman, who was on school holidays. The team interviewed Larry Kickett, Danny Ford [DIA] and Bianca Turvey (emerging country artist). |
6EBA presenter wins NAIDOC award
 (Edited from Southern Gazette article July 24 2007) | Whadjuk Radio presenter Ethel Wallam was awarded a 2007 NAIDOC Perth award in the Youth category for her work with the program. Ms.Wallam (29) said she was excited to receive the award for doing something she was so passionate about. “I enjoy keeping indigenous people informed about special events and just getting their music played and letting the non-indigenous people know about it” she said. |
| Ms.Wallam said that raising her children – Rondelle (9), Jaeleigh (8) and Kenzi (5) – was also rewarding, and with the help of her family she is able to juggle the different roles. In the NAIDOC award winner’s summary Ms. Wallam was praised as an “inspirational role model and leader within the Perth Community”. |

 | The very talented singer and songwriter Kerrianne Cox spoke to Dennis Simmons about her music and her work with the Aboriginal community in Beagle Bay. In1997 Kerrianne Cox was awarded a WAMi (Western Australia Music Industry) Award as Best Indigenous Artist of the Year and in 2000, NAIDOC's Female Artist of the Year. In 2001 she received the Deadly Vibe Female Artist of the Year given by the National Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander Music Awards (NAIDOC). In 2003 Kerrianne was awarded the Centenary Medal by the Australian government for service to her country. |
| Also in 2003, Kerrianne was awarded the ALMA (Australian Live Music Awards) Songlines Indigenous Award, and was again nominated for Deadly Vibe Female Artist of the Year. As well as being a talented musician, Kerrianne is a powerful and motivational speaker .
